“The calling of a paladin is a rare and mysterious thing,” Lady de Tylmarande finally said. She moved her hand to support her chin and placed a finger across her lips. “No one knows the workings of the gods, but it is clear one has a need that only you can fulfill.

“The things that have happened to you are manifestations of the divine power bestowed upon you. You have been invested with a portion of your patron’s spirit, their essence. You can detect an enemy to their cause, deliver blows of righteous might and lay healing hands upon the stricken.

“The path ahead of you will not be easy. It is my guess that the deity has not revealed itself fully to keep from drawing the attention of its adversary. But that adversary will have minions as well, minions which you will inevitably come into conflict with.

“Do not be afraid, however. Your power will grow as you continue dutifully in service. I must stress ‘dutifully.’ There is a strict code of conduct that accompanies any divine gift.”

As she finished, he finally looked up. Fear and lust were both absent from his thoughts as he met her eyes.

“M’lady, I appreciate your time and insight. But I must ask one more thing. How do you know all this?”

“The reason the priest sent you to me is because I am more than just a noble warrior. I am a paladin as well.”
