If you haven’t heard yet, principal shooting has begun on a Firefly movie. What’s “Firefly”, you ask? Well, it isn’t the latest offering of computer-animation bugs from Pixelworks.

Firefly was a short-lived sci-fi series on Fox. It had a western flavor that made it hard for me to warm up to right away, but the well-written episodes, character depth, and tight acting soon won me over. And it had cool spaceships.

Unfortunately, Fox kept switching timeslots and preempting it for specials. It was cancelled after the first season. The series is now out on DVD, including the pilot, which Fox didn’t air until the end of the run. I’m now getting a chance to see episodes I missed because of poor network scheduling.

The movie is set to release in 2005. Some fans have expressed concerns over having a release so close to Star Wars, but I don’t think Joss Whedon and crew have anything to worry about. I’ll see both, but if I had to chose, Serenity would get my $8.
