Novels vs short stories

Keywords: novels, Realms of the Dragons II, short stories
I fancy myself a novelist. There is something about the short story format that I just struggle with. I like the freedom that comes with a greater word count. Or perhaps I just have a natural inclination towards envisioning grander tales than would fit into 9000 words.
Coming up with the story I was going to submit for Realms of the Dragons II has been hard. Oh, I thought of a couple ideas right away, but it wasn’t until last night that the plot finally and completely coalesced in my head. It has been difficult to get into any sort of flow with my writing because of this. I now have a solid outline from start to finish, though, and I’m quite pleased with where the story is going.
What about all our other writers out there? Novel or short story? I know mrockwell is rather prolific with the short stories. Anybody else?
