Spotlight on inner dialogues

I’ve given some examples of the lack of characterization I’ve encountered in some play-by-post games. Well, there was a post in one game I play in that went the other direction, and made me groan in much the same way.
The characters had just entered this abandoned building that serves as temple for a group of Yuan-ti. One of the characters had been here before, with some other party members, and they didn’t fare so well. As we have been exploring, the player has been doing some inner dialogue reflecting his fear and trepidation.
That’s all well and good. However, another player who joined about the same time as me, decided to post some backstory about his childhood. This could have been interesting, as his character–like mine–grew up in Freeport (the campaign setting we’re using), but as I read, it appeared that the content of the post had no relation to what the party was currently doing.
This is the first time the player has made such a post, and he hasn’t come across as one of those “spotlight hog” roleplayers. I’m tempted to ask in the OOC thread what the point of the post was. Perhaps I just missed some innuendo amidst the recounting of how his mommy made him feel. Looks like I might need to increase the rank in that particular skill the next time I level.
