What’s in a name

I hate naming characters. Well, that’s not entirely true. I have a very hard time coming up with non-human fantasy names, especially for a shared world that has some established naming conventions.

As I was writing last night, I had to come up with four different gnome names for a particular scene. I had already exhausted the meager list of examples in the FRCS, and the Everchanging Book of Names doesn’t have gnomes in its FR chapter. (By the way, this is an invaluable tool for people like me and I highly recommend it to any fantasy authors and DMs.) So I just wrote “blah, blah, blah, and blah” as filler. I’ll go back tonight and use the Neverwinter Nights name generator to come up with something.
