Dethroning the Kings

I’ve about had it with Kings of Chaos. The fact that it’s made by a bunch of high schoolers is starting to show. For the last three days, I would get page failures or code errors every other time. They finally fixed the attack results page so it would load, rather than forcing me to go to my attack log to find out if I was victorious or not.

There’s also the issue of game balance. A lot of the formulas that run the mechanics seem out of whack. Damage values fluctuate so much that it seems like you do half your possible damage most of the time. Worse than that is their spying system. Your score is based on the number of agents you have, the number of “spy tools”, and your covert level. This is compared against your opponents sentry ranking. As a boon to smaller armies, the greater the ratio of sentries to total army, the better chance of success you have in detecting spy attempts.

My problem with the mechanic is that the more spies you send, the more likely it is you seem to get caught, even if your spy ranking is three times your opponents. It makes me wonder what the use of having multiple spies is, and why the ranking is calculated the way it is. Not to mention that there is no way to know if your equipment has been sabotage prior to attacking, which means you have to waste at least a turn to get the report. According to their Help section, there was a feature to check your weapons, at a cost, for sabotage prior to battle, but it’s not available in the current Age.

Fortunately, I came across a new game that has impressed me so much more than Kings of Chaos in just the couple days I’ve been playing. It’s called Dark Throne. The site design is leaps and bounds beyond KoC in terms of aesthetics (there are no ads currently), I like the mechanics better, and the gameplay is fun, moreso because it runs smoothly. And it’s only in alpha!
