Those darn Olympics

For the last two nights, I’ve been glued to the tube watching the events in Athens. I don’t know why, but I’m paying more attention to the Games this year than in the past. Instead of spending a couple hours writing Monday and Tuesday, I watched the men’s and women’s gymnastics teams win silver, Michael Phelps lose to Ian Thorpe in the 200m Freestyle and miss his chance to win more gold than Mark Spitz, and the US beat Australia in the 400m Freestyle relay.

I think this change in behavior is an indication of how good a job NBC is doing in hyping the Games. I was telling my wife last night that I probably felt more tension and pressure than the athletes because of all the build-up by the sports commentators. As a former athlete, I know there can be a lot of anxiety prior to your event, but you usually lose yourself in the performance, focusing those nerves into competitive energy.

I’m done watching for a while, however. There aren’t any more events I’m particularly interested in–though there really weren’t any to begin with–and my evenings would be better spent writing.
