Bittersweet endings

It’s done. I zipped up the Word files and emailed them off to Phil at about 1 AM this morning. The week was bittersweet for me. I was perhaps the most productive in my writing, and really enjoyed what I was writing.

The bitterness came with the realization that while I completed the story, I was short on the wordcount. My first draft is only 2/3 of what is required. I suspected this might happen a couple months ago, and it has been looming over me as I struggled to meet the deadline. To say I am disappointed would be an understatement. In my mind, I failed at my first attempt as a professional novelist.

Can this be salvaged? I am confident that with Phil’s input, and a little “distance” to get some perspective, I will complete Maiden to spec. However, this setback has tarnished what was otherwise a wonderful experience.

My posts this week will cover some of the subjects and announcements I promised before the break. After that, I’m going to shift to a post-when-something-happens schedule. I’ve still got a full plate of writing to carry me through November, so there will be plenty to share, it just may not be five times a week.
