“Little thank you” mystery revealed

My wife made an insightful comment last night. She said that in a person’s lifetime, there will be a select handful of people you could point to, looking back, as having impacted your life in such a way that it shaped the path you took. Phil Athans will be one of those people in my life, I believe.
I have gushed over Phil several times before in this blog. In one of those posts, I mentioned that he deserved the Best Editor to Work With as a First Time Author award. Well, shortly after that, Harley Stroh contacted me about sending something to Phil as a little thank you. He had an idea for a plaque that he would create then send to Ed Gentry and myself to sign.
Thinking this was a good idea, I hopped onboard. Now, when Harley said “plaque,” I imagined a 4-inch by 4-inch piece of wood with a metal plate on the front in which Harley would engrave some words of appreciation. I was quite surprised when I received a package from Ed in the mail a couple weeks ago that was 17 inches long and about half that wide.
Curious, I unwrapped the packaging and found a hand-carved, redish-brown stained pine board. Harley had routed out a large rectangle, leaving a shape in the center that resembled a dragon’s head with the letters “PA” above it. Below were the words “Elderwyrm 2004-5″.
After adding my own note of thanks to Harley’s and Ed’s, I wrapped the plaque back up and shipped it off to Phil. He sent back an email yesterday to say that he got it.
