Dragons in my hands

I gave in. I went to Borders on my lunch and it was sitting there on the New Paperbacks table. So I bought it. I just couldn’t wait for Wizards to deliver my author’s copies.
(Actually, my wife was the one who broke down and wanted to by it–not that I didn’t, but I knew the budget was tight. If you know my wife, you know how excited that meant she was about it.)
The first thing I noticed was that the cover was different than the one that WotC had put on their website. I’ll have to update my images. Add that to the list of things I need to do to the website.
Next, I read through the little blurbs about each story on the inside page. I’ll probably read Harley and Ed’s first, as I’ve known them the longest and have been dying to read their work (the Blackmoor stuff was just not enough, H 
). The first thing my wife read was the Maiden excerpt. 
In other news, I got the press release back from Ginger and have sent it out to the two biggest newspapers locally and 4 TV stations.
Local Writer Wins International Open Call, Novel Contract
Vancouver, WA—After an exhaustive, international open call that ended in July of 2003, Wizards of the Coast selected Kameron M. Franklin from over 500 entrants to write the novel Maiden of Pain for their Forgotten Realms® fiction line. The book will be in stores June 2005.
Kameron was born in Corvallis, Oregon, and moved back to the Pacific Northwest with his family when he was in the sixth grade. He graduated from Evergreen High School in 1991, and completed his Bachelor’s degree at Portland State University in 2003. He currently resides in Vancouver, WA, with his wife and son.
Kameron was introduced to the Dungeons & Dragons® roleplaying game in the third grade. Coincidentally, that was also when he started writing stories to share with his class during Show & Tell. Maiden of Pain is his first novel.

I heard back from one of the newspapers yesterday. I’m going to be interviewed by one of their columnists on Friday. It will see print in mid-May. The focus will be more on me (”local boy makes it big”), but Maiden will get a plug or two.

Congrats, Kam! Isn’t it a thrill to hold a book that you had a hand in creating? Multiply that by about a million and that’s how it will feel to hold Maiden in your hands!
