Back in the spotlight

I got a lot of work done on the outline over the weekend. Shattered Amulet now stands at 15 chapters. Maiden was only 14. I think the outline will be shorter than the one for Maiden, though. I don’ t have the level of detail overall that I did with that one. One of the reasons is that I haven’t included any dialogue like I did with Maiden. I also think the fact that this story has been in my head for 10+ years is a factor. I’m not that worried about forgetting certain plot points, or wandering off course, though I will be working hard to keep as much of the story “on stage” as possible.

The most satisfying aspect of what I did this weekend wasn’t how far I got through the outline, however. Rather, it was the solution to the gradual disappearance of the protagonist, Loghan. Now, seeing as Loghan is a rogue, you might not think that was a bad idea. I’m not talking about his ability to hide in the shadows, though.

No, he was slowly disappearing from the story. As the plot progressed, he became less and less the focal character. For one with an ego like Loghan’s, that simply would not do. Fortunately, I realized that I had totally ignored a potential plot device, and by going back and addressing that particular device through Loghan, I could return him front and center to the story.

That does beg the question, though…if he’s fading to the background so naturally, is SA really *his* story?

I think it is. He is the one that sets things in motion, and the story gives him an opportunity for redemption. I will have to rethink whether the entire trilogy is his story, however.
