Expansion

I finished the outline for Shattered Amulet last night. In doing so, I realized I need to start thinking more concretely about the second and third book in the trilogy. I’ve been focused on the first book for so long, the other two have been little more than nebulous plots in the back of my head. Of course, I still need to write SA, but that shouldn’t stop me from making plans for the rest of the series.

With the outline done, I can spend the rest of the month on my second goal, finishing “Scroll of Cairdein”. However, I don’t think I’ll have it finished. As I spend more time with this story, I’m looking at it in terms of the rough draft of a novel. There’s just so much that I keep wanting to flesh out, and I’ve always favored novels over short stories. I find the format of the latter often constricts my style. I won’t make my final decision until the end of the month, but Scroll will likely be the first novel in the Blue Lightning Brigade series.

I’ve read, and I believe, it’s better to at the very least have the whole trilogy planned out, if not written, before trying to sell it, because often in the later stages of the second or third book, you realize certain plot elements needs to be inserted/removed, etc from the first…if Book One is already in print, you’re out of luck.
