A shiny review

I saw Serenity on opening night with friends and family. I was a fan of the Firefly series, and have watched all 14 episodes on DVD. Serenity was an incredible movie: dialogue that was both snappy and witty, spot-on acting, intense action, and a riveting storyline. There was only one scene that I felt was a little forced, and that was the barfight with River that is featured in most preview clips. Supposedly, River and Simon were parting ways with the crew at this point, but River conveniently wanders into the same bar as the one Mal and Jayne are meeting their contact at. Still, this movie outshone any recent sci-fi flick (i.e., Star Wars Episodes 1-3), and I fully expect either a return to TV for the series, or a movie sequel. If you haven’t seen it, go, even if you never saw one of the TV episodes. Joss Whedon does an excellent job introducing the characters, and while there are definitely things that would make more sense or feel more complete if you had watched the show, it is in no way necessary to enjoy the movie. I’ll likely go see it in theaters again, and plan to buy the DVD.

October Goals
I didn’t accomplish either of my writing goals for September. This month, I’m not setting any. Writing is taking a back seat as I prep for the GRE and prepare all the application materials necessary to go to graduate school. I’ve decided to pursue a MFA in Creative Writing with the intent of teaching in a private secondary school or at the college level. I’m aiming high–my first two choices are the University of Montana and the University of Iowa, two of the best programs in the nation.

U of M??? NOOOOO! I went to MSU…I’ll never be able to speak to you again if you become a Grizzly! ;)

Seriously, though, would you guys move to Montana? It’s beautiful, but it’s got a very tough job market.

And RE: Serenity…I read in Starlog that the actors had already signed on for 2 sequels, if this one does well.

Yeah, we’d move wherever I end up going. I’m not too worried about the job market. Between financial aid and the money we make off selling the house here, I’ll probably be able to get a TA position or something menial and part-time to pay expenses. We’d only stay while I’m in school then move where the job is.

Ahhh…so pleasant to know more and more eyes will read kind words about Serenity and Firefly. Spread the word!

Good to hear about the movie. I will try to get there in the next week or so.

As for the MFA. You know my feelings. I don’t condone any course of action that takes you away from the game group. ;) You’ll just have to convince them to let you attend school remotely!

Seriously, though, I hope you get one of your first choices. It would serve you right.

If you need a “date”, I’m definitely for seeing it a second time. ;)

And now I kinda wish I was in America. The movie doesn’t come out here for another month… oh well, I can go as an early birthday present to myself.

And Kameron, I sympathise about not meeting goals. Just be careful that writing doesn’t take too much of a back seat. Wouldn’t want you to become rusty or stop altogether. That would be too much of a shame.

Yeah, I’m only holding off until I get the GRE out of the way, which shouldn’t take more than a month. It’s too easy for me to stop studying to write, and I need to study. It’s been years since I’ve done algebra or geometry.

Just saw Serenity tonight. I watched one episode of the show, and wasn’t impressed (don’t think I even finished the episode), but I liked this movie.

Sure, there were gaps that people like me didn’t get (the background of the priestess/amazon with a laser bow chick), but nothing that really detracted from the story.

    Good flick.
