A hearty congratulations to Harley Stroh, who just got paid $1000 to write his first novel. That’s right, Harley made it to the final round of the White Wolf Novel contest.

After much deliberation, conversing with Erik Scott de Bie about his application process, and reading a recent entry in Elaine Cunningham’s writing journal, I’ve reached a decision about my writing sample for my grad application. This was a difficult struggle for me, as I didn’t want to feel like I was hiding who I was in order to get accepted. That’s the nasty thing about labels. “Fantasy author” tends to elicit smirks in academic circles.

While fantasy fiction is what I really like to write–and read–I have written non-genre stories, and have plans to write a novel or two that would likely be shelved under “Literature” in most bookstores. Being able to show my range as a writer will hopefully be another edge on top of also being published. Therefore, I plan on submitting both my short story from Realms of the Dragons II along with a “literary” piece that got good reviews in a workshop I took while at college.
