Review: Fall 2006 TV shows

Last year it was mainly Lost, with an occasional CSI on Thursday nights. This fall, I’ve added three more shows and two nights to my viewing schedule. Two of the shows are brand new, the other I’m watching for the first time during its regular time slot.
Heroes
Superheroes go primetime, baby. I love the premise, and my wife absolutely loves Hiro. As most critics noted, the show started off slow, the fault of trying to introduce so many different characters at once. Things have started to come together over the last couple episodes and last night was probably the best episode so far. My only major complaint to date is the amount of gore, primarily due to the regenerative powers of one of the characters.
Studio 60
Aaron Sorkin has received a lot of flak for the ego-stroking, autobiographical, industry insider focus he’s taken with the show, but I’ve enjoyed the witty banter and humor. Last night’s episode revolved around various cast relationships, so perhaps he’s turning a corner. I was a big fan of West Wing, and have not been disappointed by his latest production.
Lost
The revelation about the Others in the premiere blew me away, but last week’s episode was ho-hum. I have faith that won’t be the norm.
Battlestar Galactica
After spending the summer getting caught up on Seasons 1 & 2 thanks to Netflix, I was ready to tune in Friday. The premise of the first two episodes–cylon-occupied New Caprica–were a little disappointing and very transparent, but last week had some awesome twists and returned the show to space.
