Nostalgia’s hype

I received the first DVD in the six-part Season One of the Star Blazers from Netflix last week. I had fond memories of this anime series. I was six when it first came out, and I only watched it sporadically. The image of a space-faring battleship stuck with me, so when I saw Netflix had all three seasons, I quickly added them to our queue.
The opening theme song still stirred my boyish excitement, but the content of the first five episodes quickly dampened the enthusiasm my nostalgia had built up. It was disappointing to see inconsistencies in both artwork and plot devices. I ended up removing the rest of the DVDs from the queue; another childhood memory tarnished.
Update on “Relvan’s Rescue”
Rejection: Strange Horizons (return time <2 months)
Jim Baen’s Universe is open again for submissions, so I’m sending to them next. They take electronic submissions, and, if you are a published author (i.e., you have credentials that would grant you membership in SWFA), you can send them a query and get your submission taken out of the slush pile.

The exact thing happened to me with Battle of the Planets/Gatchaman. I rented the DVD last Spring remembering how cool they were growing up, the vehicles, the costumes, the weapons, etc. man was I so wrong. lol
The thing is, they’ve announced a feature length movie in the works based on this. Sigh… Yes, I’ll probably watch it, just like I’ll watch Speed Racer next summer.
At least Indiana Jones is back! Even if he’s getting a bit old to swing a whip.

Guess I’ll just leave Star Blazers in my memory where it can do no harm.

If I have spared at least one other soul, then my sacrifice was worth it.
