Larry Craig reconsiders

Occasionally, I’ll turn on the news while I’m eating breakfast to check the weather. When I did so today, I caught the story about Larry Craig’s “intent” to resign. My political cynicism tends to make me apathetic about these things. Anything he does now just reads as spin, whether he’s “guilty” or not.
What really interests me about this story is the voice mail obtained by Roll Call. Listening to the recording, I have to conclude he either didn’t realize he called the wrong number, or this is a calculated leak engineered by his crisis management team. I’m not quite jaded enough to think it’s the latter, but I don’t want to believe it is the former. I mean, wouldn’t the recorded message before the “beep” tip you off. “Hi, you’ve reached Billy Martin, high-powered attorney. I’m playing golf right now and can’t come to the phone, so please leave a message.” sounds a lot different than “Hi, you’ve reached the City desk of Roll Call, the newspaper of Capitol Hill since 1955 and leading publisher of Congressional news and information. Got a hot tip or juicy dirt on the latest D.C. scandal. Please press 1 to speak to an editor now.”
