EWA preview: part 1

I can’t tell you how excited I am that we are less than 3 weeks away from finishing the alpha development cycle for Eternal Warlords: Arena. We have been working on this game since October 2006. It’s been hard keeping tight-lipped about the details of the game itself, but I feel like it’s time to start revealing what we have in store for you. Hopefully, I’ll be able to contain myself enough that I won’t give away all the surprises.

So, what is Eternal Warlords: Arena? I believe I’ve mentioned that it is an online, turn-based strategy game developed in Flash. If you have played D&D Minis, you’ll have a general idea of what gameplay is like. To play the game, you will have to create an account on the game portal website, click the link to launch the game and log in to the server.

Once you are logged in, you will find yourself in the Nexus. This is the lobby where you can challenge other players, chat with friends, enter your Camp to assemble your team of units, or visit the Guild to hire new units or discharge unused ones.

When you are ready to battle, simply click on a platform with an unoccupied space. Your avatar, which can be selected from your Camp, will appear in the space. If the other half of the platform is occupied, a match will automatically begin. Otherwise, your avatar will wait patiently until another player accepts the challenge.

When the match begins, both teams will appear in opposite corners of the Arena. The Arena is a thematic, tile-based map the units must navigate as they converge upon each other for battle. At launch, the Arena will be a dungeon, complete with treasure chests, unholy altars, and torture devices, which serve as cover and obstacles to movement that players can use to gain tactical advantages.

Well, I think that’s enough for now. The preview will continue later this week with some discussion about the units themselves. Hopefully, I’ll be able to conclude it next week with some screenshots of the game interface.

    Kam,

I have to say that this sounds awesome. Just the other day I went looking for an “online mini game” but wasn’t able to refine my search in a way that found anything useful.

Do you anticipate eventually offering other eras/genres of settings/troops?

Not at this time, though the whole “Eternal” theme would open things up for different eras.

I repeatedly do searches for “online Flash miniature strategy game”, or some derivative, and never come up with anything remotely similar to EWA. It’s hard for me to believe we might be the first to penetrate this market.
