EWA preview: XP and gold

In the last Eternal Warlords preview, I talked about a unit’s secondary attributes, which included Level and Cost. The level of a unit is a general gauge of its power. The higher the level, the more powerful the unit.

A unit’s level also helps determine how much experience the player gains. The difference in levels between the destroyed unit and the unit that deals the killing blow acts as a multiplier. If the killing unit is lower in level, the player earns more experience points. If it is greater, the player earns less. No experience is earned if a unit destroys another that is 3 or more levels lower than itself.

A player needs experience to gain Warlord levels. Your Warlord level determines how powerful of a unit you can command. You cannot hire or place on your team a unit whose level is greater than your Warlord level.

Not only do you earn experience for destroying units, but you also earn the gold necessary to hire new units. Whether you win or lose an Arena battle, you earn gold for each unit on your opponent’s team that you destroyed. It’s also possible to sell back unit’s you no longer use to the Guild, but only for a fraction of their cost.

Earning experience and gold adds another level of strategy to Eternal Warlords: Arena. Players will need to consider what unit they will use to finish off an opponent in order to maximize the amount of experience they’ll receive. And even if you are only able to destroy one or two of your opponent’s units before you are defeated, you’ll still gain some reward and be making progress toward bettering your team.

Well, there are no plans to allow the transfer of gold between player accounts, so hopefully the farmers will stay away. :D

So I bought the EWAGoldFarmers.com domain for nothing?

Hmm, if a unit is “destroyed”, does that mean it needs to be replaced by having to purchase it again at the guildhouse? While that makes sense, its not really how D&D minis does it (or any other minis game or CCG I’ve seen). Most of the time you are building your army based on units you have at your disposal (based on what you’ve received through random blister packs, usually, which is how the $$$ is made). And then warbands are formed based on a point buy system that both opponents agree on. Will this have an opposite model in that all units will be available at a certain cost of gold, and thus the more dominant you are the more successful you will be (as you will not have to keep putting out more gold to replace your warband)?

Do units heal automatically between battles, or will they need to have gold put forward to heal them up as well? If the former, I can see a strategy forming where you try to spread damage across units without having to lose them… I also don’t see a whole lot of desire for huge hordes of small units, but rather battles that will consist of one or two beefy units (to help prevent the need to replace units after victory).

“Destroyed” is for the match only. The units are back to full health after the match. EWA utilizes both a point buy and max number of units cap for forming a team (currently 100 points or 8 units).
